Basketball coach Jim Martin was severely injured on Wednesday, April 26 just before 3 p.m. when the school bus he was serving as a bus monitor on collided head-on with a Honda Accord driven by an unlicensed 16-year-old in New Castle on Lake Road.

The crash injured at least nine people including Martin, who had been on the bus with the driver, another monitor, and two Yorktown Central School District students, according to New Castle Police.

In the days since the crash, Martin's son Michael Conboy started a GoFundMe page to raise money for his medical expenses.

On the fundraiser page, Conboy wrote that Martin has to undergo hip surgery and is currently in the intensive care unit, where he is under traction with a metal rod in his leg.

According to Conboy, Martin is a fixture in the Yorktown community and has coached countless travel basketball teams in the town.

He also spent 15 years coaching at St. Joseph School in Bronxville, becoming "loved on and off of the court," Conboy wrote.

"Basketball is a true labor of love for Jim, he has dedicated many hours on and off the court and is passionate that his kids thrive as athletes and work together and have fun," Conboy added, also writing that Martin lives in Yorktown with his wife, daughter, and two dogs, in addition to having two sons who live in Fleetwood and Brooklyn.

"Jim would do anything for his family and friends, and we are all deeply saddened by this news and are praying for a speedy and full recovery," Conboy wrote on the fundraiser page.

As of Friday, April 28 around 1:45 p.m., just under $6,500 had been raised for Martin out of the $10,000 goal.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the GoFundMe page can do so by clicking here.

In addition to Martin, three teenagers who were in the Honda Accord suffered life-threatening injuries. GoFundMe pages have also been started for them to raise money for their recovery.

The crash is still under investigation, New Castle Police said, adding that more information will soon be released.
